A Study on the Status of the Sex Ratio, Living Children, Ideal Number of Children, Additional Number of Children of the Eligible Women in An Urban Area


Abstract
For the purpose of ascertaining the current concept on the sex ratio, pregnancy, -the number of live-birth, the number of living children, the ideal number of child ren, and additional children desired, among Korean women residing in urban area. The authors conducted a series of survey towards 625 "eligible women (currently family planning practice group; 208, none family planning practice group; 417) of reproductive women aging from 20 to 39, whom picked up as the visitors in Kyung Bee Medical Center and Dongdaemoon Ku Health Center, Seoul city.
The results are as follow:
1) The sex ratio of infant child was 115.9 (currently family planning practice group is 285.71 and none practice group is 91.2). The population sex ratio was 104. 4 (112.5 and 99.4).
2) The mean of family size is 3.97 persons (4.56 and 3.67).
3) The mean number of pregnancy was 2.91 (3.85 and 2.44).
4) The mean number of live-birth was 1.99 (2.63 and 1.67).
5) 63.4 percent (52.4 percent and 68.8 percent) out of total respondents had experienced the induced abortions.
The mean number of the induced abortion experienced by the respondents has been -computed as 0.69 times (1. 00 times and 0.53 times). And the mean number of induced abortions among those who had one or more induced abortions has been computed As 1.87 times (2.09 times and 1.70 times).
The rate of the experienced abortion was seen to be more increasing according to -the young age than the old age above 39 years.
The induced abortion experience rate rose with the rise of the high educational backgrounds of the respondents.
6) About 14.7 percent (13.5 percent and 15.3 percent) of the 625 women investigated reported. having had one or more experience in spontaneous abortions.
Mean for spontaneous abortions was 0.20 (0.17 and 0. 22).
7) Number of living children of the currently family planning practice group was averaged 2.52 (son: 1.49 and daughter: 1.03) and none practice group was averaged L"65 (0.86 -and 0 79).
8) The respondents of the currently family planning practice group wished to have more child by 0.35 (son: 0.21 and daughter: 0. 14) and none practice group wished to have more child by 0.86 mean number (0.55 and 0.31).
9) The "ideal" number of children of, the currently family planning practice group was 2.61 (1.59 and 1. 02), none practice group was 2.45 (1.36 and 1. 09) and specially 20-29 age group was found of a composition of 1 son and 1 daughter, and 30-39 age group was found of 2 sons and 1 daughter.
